Licihof: a wooden house on open meadow

This page describes the Licihof as a whole: the building, the grounds and the character of a stay. What is individually available inside is listed on the amenities page; how it looks is shown in the gallery.

Līči — the name

At the edge of the grounds stands a wooden sign with the routed lettering Līči. That is the Latvian name of the farmstead; Licihof is the German form built from it. The property's own wordmark sets both parts side by side: Licihof and Talsi, separated by a stylised ear of grain.

The building

The Licihof is a long, single-storey timber building. Its façade is clad in vertical and horizontal boards and stained dark; below the cladding sits a plinth of laid fieldstones which stays visible in several places. The roof is covered with anthracite-coloured tiles.

At one end a taller gable section rises. Its cladding carries a diamond ornament — a detail that recurs in photographs from several different years and makes this side of the building easy to tell from the others.

Inside, two different finishes meet: rooms with pale plastered walls and wooden boards, and rooms with an exposed beamed ceiling, terracotta tiles and boarded walls, some with open brick panels. The tiled masonry stove with its cast-iron range belongs to the older part.

House and grounds

The house does not stand in a row but freely on its plot. The lawn runs right up to the wall; single mature deciduous trees stand around it, among them oaks with wide-spreading crowns. From one of these oaks a wooden swing hangs on two long ropes.

In front of the entrance lies a paved area with a garden table, folding chairs and a parasol; elsewhere sun loungers stand in the grass. A fire pit ringed with fieldstones lies a little apart, with garden torches and stacked firewood.

The grounds include planted beds: roses along the house wall, hydrangeas by the entrance, a rhododendron at the edge of the lawn, pansies in a planter on the fieldstone wall. Storks can be seen on the ground behind the house; rapeseed fields lie within sight.

The stay

The Licihof is a house for self-catering: there is a kitchen with a hob and oven, a long table in the dining room and crockery for a larger group. Heating is by radiators; in addition there is a tiled masonry stove and a free-standing wood stove with firewood.

Outdoors the open ground sets the rhythm of the day: a table in the shade of the trees, loungers in the evening sun, the fire pit at night. In winter the photographs show cleared paths, deep drifts and lit windows behind the porch roof.
